Review: Some girls Bite by Chloe Neil

Some Girls Bite (Chicagoland Vampires #1)
by Chloe Neil

Synopsis:

I was a grad student until Chicago vampires announced their existence to the world, and a rogue vampire attacked me, scared by the master of Cadogan House. To save me, Ethan Sullivan converted me. The Lord of the Hyde Park manor is tall, green-eyed, full of four centuries worth of charm. Suddenly I am handy with serious weaponry, and pursued by an unknown enemy.

MY THOUGHTS:

This is one of those series I've had for ever in my TBR pile. What was holding me back? I'm not at all a fan of the cover. Sorry if you think different hehe.
But I'm so glad I decided to check it anyway.
What finally conviced me, was not the blurb that I really liked, but a phrase I read that I found funny:

“He's twenty-nine. And what did you think he was going to look like?"
She shrugged.
"You know-old. Grizzled. Long white beard. Scruffy robes. Loveable, smart, a little absent minded."
I bit back a grin.
" I said 'sorcerer,' not 'Dumbledore.' So he's hot. It could be worse.”

Through this book, I've had ups and downs but it end up pretty good. I liked almost everything about it, the premise, the mystery, the writing, the characters... all of it.

I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 just because I would have wanted a little more intensity in every aspect, which I'm sure I will get in the next instalment as the characters mature and they gain depth.

The premise: original. Yes, vampire's existence is now known by humans, we've read about that, but that's not the unique part. I loved the way the vampires are united in groups called Houses and how each House has specific characteristics and ways to behave. We have some killings that are the beginning of the action packed plot.

Characters: I enjoyed the characters  very much. I like that they feel real but also have a funny side, like Merit and her friend Mallory.  They made me laugh so often. They were great and brave, which is a plus for heroines.

Ethan is delicious and powerful, a true leader and he is super sexy. And so is Morgan.
Actually, Morgan is beyond hot, everything Ethan is but 10 times more. *swoon* Can't wait to read more about these 2.

My Morgan L&G! :p

Writing: amazing. Impeccable. Flowed smoothly and just left me with the urge to read more.

Will I recommend it? Absolutely. I'm getting book 2 ASAP.

I hope you liked it!

EXCERPT:

As she rinsed the last dish, Mia jumped when strong arms suddenly wrapped around her middle.
“Sorry,” Nate whispered into her ear. “I didn’t mean to scare you. I thought you heard me.”
She turned off the running water and leaned against him. “No, I was lost in my head. What did you say?”
Nate leaned down and kissed her on the back of her neck. Mia shivered. No matter where or how many, his kiss always left her lightheaded.
“I asked what’s for dessert,” he repeated, kissing her again.
Mia turned in his arms, laughing. “That’s so cliché, you know.”
“What do you mean?” he asked with mock disbelief.
She rolled her eyes. “Oh, please. You say ‘what’s for dessert’ then I say something ordinary and then you say something cheesy like wanting me for dessert.”
He looked down at her, thoughtful. “Hmm, that does sound like something I’d say. But this hungry man could actually still eat.”
“Oh,” Mia said, a little embarrassed by her rash assumption. He was serious. Nate wasn’t a small guy and could honestly still be hungry. “Well…” she began lamely, “I don’t have anything else to feed you.”
Nate’s eyes sparkled. “Yeah, you do,” he whispered. He placed his hands on the counter to either side of her, trapping her between his solid frame and the sink. “I said I could still eat.”
Mia paused, confused. Then she laughed, recognizing the heated suggestion in his eyes. “You’re bad,” she murmured, shoving at his hard chest.
He leaned in closer, his lips only a breath away from hers. “And you like it.”

MY THOUGHTS:

4 stars!

I am really happy I read this book. Honestly, I'm pleasantly surprised.
Because this is forever, is the third novel in a series but can be read as a stand-alone.

The story goes around Mia and Nate, and starts with a little background and a few chapters where they were initially dating and when she finds out she is pregnant.

I must admit that I found one thing a little cheesy, especially, taking Mia's mom story into account. I'm talking about the fact that at 24, Mia was a virgin and got pregnant on her first sexual encounter.

Besides that, I only have good things to say about this story. After those few chapters, the story goes forward to the moment when little Mikey is 5 years old. Mia finds herself in a difficult financial situation and as a last resource, she decides to contact Nate. (who doesn's know he is a father)

The way he takes the news, the relationship with his son from the very first moment, it's brilliant.

“I could tell from the beginning, just by the way you talked about him,” her mother said. “And I was really hoping you wouldn‟t get hurt, but men will be men, and you can‟t love a man more than he loves you. He has to love you more, Mia, or else you end up with your heart broken.”
Tears began to flow down her cheeks. That‟s where Mia had made her mistake. She had loved him so much and had fooled herself into thinking he felt the same way.

Cover: gorgeous

Character developent: very good. This is one of those books where I relate to all the characters. I could't take sides. Both of them have valid reason for their actions and the situation is utterly realistic.

Writing: I loved the writing style. Lena makes it simple without being dull or ordinary. Suddenly I realized I was almost at half of the book and it took me just a few hour to finish it!

Plot: interesting and beyond sweet.

This is how I imagine Mia and Nate!

Would I recommend it? Yes.
To whom? to any person that enjoys fast paced love stories.

Review: The Soul's Mark: Changed

THE SOUL'S MARK: CHANGED

(The Soul's Mark #4) by Ashley Stoyanoff

SYNOPSIS:

Ever since college student Amelia Caldwell moved to Willowberg, her life has been in turmoil. But with the evil vampire hunters no longer terrorizing the town, Willowberg is once again peaceful.

With a little help from Mother Nature and a dream for a better future, Mitchell has found himself in a predicament—after eight hundred years of being immortal, he is now a human while his soulmate is a vampire.

Now all Amelia and Mitchell have to do is hide from the world until his body can handle the change. But when Mitchell gets a cold, all hell breaks loose.

With an unexpected resistance rising, and an unexplained deadline from the spirits, Amelia realizes that this is a fight she cannot win alone. One thing is clear, though: to save Mitchell, he needs to change—again. But if he does, what chance does he have of surviving it?

MY THOUGHTS:

4.5 STARS :)

** I received an ARC from the author in exchange for my honest review**

Well, I'm a super fan of Ashley, that's no surprise, and the fact that I really enjoyed this book isn't, either.
I've loved this series since the start.

I've grown attached to all the characters with different personalities and stories.

What can I say? I absolutely loved it!

Ok, well, maybe not the first part hehe, I found that at the beginning every character was a little whinny and didn't do much, from Lola, to Millie to Mitch but as the story progressed I got caught up in the plot, as always!

Cover:
The best so far. I really like it! and it's very representative.

Writing:
If you are looking for a simple writing this is not your kind of book. Stoyanoff's writing is complex and it makes you think, it entangles you in all the twists and details of the story line and at the same time it flows smoothly and keeps you glued to the pages. I believe her writing keeps improving book after book.

I think that, even unexpected, the 'TSM: Changed' was an outstanding end to the series. It brings closure and helps you understand a lot of things that have been happening in the other 3 books.

Characters:
They gained depth and in this installment, we get to know all of them better, specially Lola whom I related to more than in the previous books.

Also we get a lot more of Angelle and Ty's story. Those two are just so perfect and so incredibly cute together that you can't help loving them.

In this book, I even liked Mitchell! I've been hating him since the beginning but now I can understand his actions, his selfishness and overprotectiveness towards Amelia.

To sum up: I'd totally recommend it and this is a series I will miss!

Deep Six: Interview with author Ian Thomas Healy

Deep Six

When criminals are convicted, they go to jail. When they have parahuman abilities, they go to Deep Six, the most secure prison facility in the world. Six thousand feet underground, nobody has ever escaped from the maximum security facility.

Until now.

A parahuman terrorist called Misrule engineers a mass breakout, and it falls to a pair of prison guards to stop the world's most dangerous criminals from reaching freedom, and Just Cause won't be able to help them. Despite being overmatched and underpowered, the two guards must find a way to prevent the escapees from their ultimate goal.

Expected publication: November 29th 2013 by Local Hero Press

INTERVIEW

1.    For people who haven’t heard of Deep Six , make a brief description.

Deep Six is the fourth book in the Just Cause Universe series. It broadens the storytelling universe by introducing the employees and residents of the most secure prison facility in the world, used to contain those convicted criminals for whom a normal prison will not suffice. Nobody has ever escaped from the underground prison, so naturally, that’s exactly what happens. The story deals with two underpowered guards who have to try to stop the inmates from reaching their freedom. They’re outmanned and outgunned and the ringleader, a vicious killer named Misrule, seems to outwit them at every turn. Think of it like Die Hard, but with superpowers.

2.    When did you decide to become a writer?

I wrote my first story at age 7 or 8, using my thumb, my dad’s inkpad, and a pencil. It was called “The Happy Days Gang Goes to the Disco” and was about a group of little cartoon characters having a dance party. Not exactly high literature, but you can find it scanned on my Facebook page (www.facebook.com/authorianthomashealy). Ever since then, I’ve been finding ways to tell stories.

3.    Which of your characters is your favorite and why?

Mustang Sally is my favorite for sure. I’ve written more words directly about her and those related to her than anyone else in all the years I’ve been writing. I feel like a proud father, watching her grow up from an uncertain teenager to a self-assured young woman has been a great source of joy for me. I’ll admit, I also like putting her through the wringer and seeing how she gets out of all that trouble. I have several more novels planned around her as she continues to grow and mature.

4.    If you could have coffee with any character of any book, who would it be and why?

I think I’d like to hang out with Jackrabbit (his novel is coming out next spring). He’s the avatar of the Rabbit God, and weirdness just seems to follow him around. He’s a fun person and if I was ever going to accidentally develop superpowers, it would be because he was around.

5.    If you could meet any person in the world who would it be and why?

I’d like to meet George R.R. Martin, the editor of the Wild Cards book series, which was a great source of inspiration to me, so I can pitch an idea for a character and story to incorporate into a future volume of the series.

6.Name a book you wish you had written.

Is it catty of me to say Harry Potter? Not that teenage wizards are my thing—at all—but the paychecks would be nice.

7. Would you like your book turned into a movie? Do you have any actors in mind?

Oh gosh, I think most authors would love to see their books turned into good movies—and we’re terrified of our work becoming attached to a bad movie. I’m really bad with picking actors and actresses, because I don’t even know who most of them are. Let’s go with Mickey Rourke (Iron Man 2) as Misrule, Stana Katic (Castle) as Katie Malone, Chris Pine (Star Trek Into Darkness) as Tim, Willem DaFoe (Spider-Man) as The Etched Man, and Eddie McClintock (Warehouse 13) as Crackerjack.

8.What do you do, besides writing?

I drive a pretty mean forklift at my day job as a warehouse manager. I also love to cook (and experiment in the kitchen!), and am raising three kids. I follow a couple of hockey teams—the Colorado Avalanche and the Denver Cutthroats—and attend games when I can afford to (which is rare—people need to buy more of my books!).

9.Name your favorite authors.

My favorite authors in no particular order are Alan Moore, Frank Miller, Karl Schroeder, Alan Dean Foster, Mike Resnick, Aaron Allston, Carrie Vaughn, Genevieve Valentine, and the collected authors of the Wild Cards series of novels edited by George R.R. Martin. I tend to jump around a lot in what I read. I was on a real steampunk kick for awhile. Now I’m reading more fantasy. Before then I was reading superheroes and space opera. I’m sure I’ll come back around to any of those at some point in the future.

10. Is there something you want the readers to know about you?

I have luscious curls that are all the way to the small of my back when straight, and am working on growing out the Full Wizard beard, because reasons.

11. How do you react to a bad review?

Badly. LOL.
No, really I just mark them as unhelpful and continue on with my day. If I’m feeling particularly vindictive, I will go through the other reviews that person has written and mark all them as unhelpful as well. Yes, it’s a little junior high school, but it keeps me from making the Big Author Mistake of replying to them.

Thank you Ian for this great and funny interview! I totally agree with you on question number 6! lol
